Hi Maya,
I just finished reading your book.
When we have met so far I have always been attracted to your sparkling personality and optimism. Having read your book I can now add a sparkling mind as well to that attraction. I didn't expect to enjoy reading such a wide range of anecdotes in different situations but that was a pleasure in itself.
You, and your translator, have such an excellent command of the English language and I also learnt a lot through the excellent historic facts and stories you told because you used them so well to illustrate a point or support a point you were making. I can imagine turning many of these short stories into stage sketches would have been so much fun and made for hilarious viewing by the audience. There is a word in the English language called "Eclectic" ..you really personify that word.
You are a true Kafana and hell of a company to be with {your words in Story 76 "They are all Cubans to the Chinese"}.... if only via the written word in this instance. Hopefully you will get to Australia one day and you can relax and let us be your Tour Guide... while you take notes for another book to be named.... "Tour Guide on Tour with my Aussie Tourists".
All the best in your future endeavours..your No 1 Aussie fan and mate.
JIM, Australia!

Dear Maja,
Just a couple of lines to thank you very much for the wonderful time we had in your beautiful country.
I enclose one of the pictures I took during our very enjoyable day excursion.
Our last evening in Belgrade was unforgettable, we did enjoy ourselves so much and Branko and his band were so wonderfully skilled performers and so warm-hearted human beings too, that it really was the icing on the cake of a memorable stay. It is things like this that make one come back to certain places.
We are hardened travellers and have been (almost) all over the world but we will treasure our memories of your country for ever.
If you happen to visit Madrid, any time, please let us know and we will try to reciprocate your splendid hospitality.
All the best.

I want gratefully thank you for the magnificent guided tour I had in Belgrade last Monday. Mrs. Maja Rogan told me more about history of town and people than I ever had known. And I am just an historian. Yours sincerely Martin Roos, Leiden, The Netherlands.

If you are as lucky as I recently was and draw Maja as your tour guide, fasten your safety belt because you will be treated to a most memorable ride. You will learn things you never got in school like at President Tito’s funeral in 1980 gathered 120 heads of state to pay their respects….the most representatives ever assembled for a requiem. You may even discover what flavor of ice cream Nikola Tesla preferred.
In between a torrent of information on history, politics and world events, Maya will occasionally serenade you with a traditional Serbian ballad.
You can sit in your hotel room and watch television, or you can join this delightful lady and widen your world.

Tu come stai? Tutto bene a Belgrado?

A tour of Belgrade under Maja’s guidance is not like any other guided tour. It is so much more than you can expect. Maja will introduce you to all sides of Belgrade’s past and present. What’s more she will sing some beautiful songs and if you ask her, she might even do a little dance. I am sure you will enjoy this experience as much as I did.

The tour which Maja gave me was one of the most thrilling ones I have ever experienced. This tour was not just a collection of facts, stories and legends. It gave me a unique feeling about the nature of the city, its character and helped me to get to know Serbians better. Wait until you hear Maja sing one of the traditional Serbian songs. You have not yet experienced anything similar to this!

My trip was wonderful, both work and pleasure – I thoroughly enjoyed Serbia. Your guidance made my visit extra special – thank you for introducing me to Belgrade. I also want to thank you for all the tourist information that you left for me at the hotel. I have loved looking through the information and I hope that someday I can return. I especially enjoyed the “Soulfood” booklet – I plan to make the raspberry cake and the mushroom goulash! Thank you. I hope our paths cross again.

The Late Roman fortified palace compound and memorial complex of Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, in the east of Serbia, was commissioned by Emperor Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus, in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. It was known as Felix Romuliana, named after the emperor's mother. The site consists of fortifications, the palace in the north-western part of the complex, basilicas, temples, hot baths, memorial complex, and a tetrapylon. The group of buildings is also unique in its intertwining of ceremonial and memorial functions.
The Studenica Monastery was established in the late 12th century by Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serb state, shortly after his abdication. It is the largest and richest of Serbia's Orthodox monasteries. Its two principal monuments, the Church of the Virgin and the Church of the King, both built of white marble, enshrine priceless collections of 13th- and 14th-century Byzantine painting.
On the outskirts of Stari Ras, the first capital of Serbia, there is an impressive group of medieval monuments consisting of fortresses, churches and monasteries. The monastery at Sopoćani is a reminder of the contacts between Western civilization and the Byzantine world.
The ancient imperial palace Felix Romuliana was located in today’s Eastern Serbia, and the remains of it’s gigantic towers and fortifications show the might of the Roman emperor Galerius, buried on the hill above it.
The monumental imperial palace Felix Romuliana was created when the Roman Emperor Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, in the late period of his reign, decided to withdraw to his birth place. Its remains were found in the archaeological site known also as Gamzigrad, near the city of Zaječar in Eastern Serbia.
In 2007 Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, was put on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List.

The preparations for the construction of one of the greatest Orthodox cathedrals in the world began in 1894. The Cathedral is built on the very spot where, according to tradition, the relics of Sveti Sava were brought from Mileseva monastery and burnt, following the orders of Sinan Pasha in 1594. The construction was interrupted by the bombardment at the beginning of World War II, and continued in 1985.
