Belgrade fortress is the most important cultural-historical complex in the city, standing above the Sava-Danube confluence. Several monuments to well-known people in cultural & public life have been erected in the park.
The Belgrade fortress is one of the most fascinating points on the sacral and secular geography of Euroasia. Since its construction the Belgrade fortress has been constantly attacked and defended , destroyed and renovated. Chronicles trace a history of about 40 to 60 devastations of the fortress. Kalemegdan park is the largest and loveliest park in Belgrade with an area of 52 ha. Work on the park started on the orders of Prince Mihajlo Obrenovic after the fortress had been handed over to the Serbs in 1867. The draft design was made by Emilijan Josimovic.
